Oh why not... An alternate viewpoint:

Does WO5.2.2 not work with java1.3.1 but only with java1.4.1?
Yes. If you read between the lines on the Tech Note, that is what it
said. Someone at Apple has confirmed this to me privately.
The "What's New" is even clearer: "earlier versions of Java are not
supported"
http://developer.apple.com/documentation/WebObjects/WhatsNew/WhatsNew/chapter_1_section_3.html
If you are annoyed about this as me, maybe drop Apple a line somehow.
Wasn't there some email address for WO feedback that was once circulated
on the list by Apple?

[What annoys me is all of these inter-dependent changes. I hate making a
lot of changes at once, it often leads to disaster. But in this case, if
you want to use 5.2.2, you need to switch to JDK 1.4.1.

I'm happy about that. The Java API changed between 1.3 and 1.4. If
they had maintained backward compatibility that would have prevented
them from using some of the new features in 1.4. And those new
features are why we wanted 1.4, aren't they? I'm still not all that
keen on Java, but if we must have Java 1.4 or later is the place to be.
If you want to use 5.2.2., you need to switch to Panther on OSX.

Why? PBX still runs on Windows and there is always Eclipse/WOLips!
Eclipse/WOLips runs on Panther, Jaguar, and Win2K (among others).
If you want to switch to Panther, you need to switch to 5.2.2.

Or Eclipse/WOLips. :-)
If you want to transition to
JDK 1.4.1., you need to switch to Panther and 5.2.2. Etc.

Or Eclipse/WOLips and 5.2.2. Did I say that already? ;-)
You've got to
do it all, or nothing (and nothing means missing out on the bug fixes in
5.2.2 too). It annoys me greatly, and I think it's a customer
dis-service to us existing WO users. Of course to a new WO user starting
with 5.2.2, no big deal---it seems to me this new WO user was all that
Apple considered. Existing users need a more graceful transition period
than "Here's 5.2.2, you've got to make a bunch of changes if you want to
use this micro-version increment to get it's bug fixes".]
What choice did they have? Maintaining two separate versions for 1.3
and 1.4 would have been too expensive. Sticking with 1.3 would have
been suicide in the Java app server market. Even 1.4 is getting dated
with 1.4 out soon. Sticking with 1.3 API in 1.4 would have placed too
many useful features out of the Apple developers reach.
PS: Goodluck trying to 'downgrade' back to 5.2.1 if you aren't ready for
JDK 1.4.1 yet. You've got to uninstall and reinstall, there's no
downgrade, on any OS.
I don't know of many software packages that do support a downgrade
install gracefully. But maybe I've just been unlucky.
