But that is older software running on a newer JVM (i.e. the 5.2.1
that sort
of, mostly ran under 1.4.1)
As far as I can tell, WebObjects 5.2.1 frameworks where running very
fine under Java 1.4.1.

Yes they were running however there was some subtle bugs. I did find a
few with the encoding/decoding of UTF-8 string where the Java API have
been changed from 1.3 to 1.4 to correct a bug in Java and WO did not
take advantage of that correction because of the 1.3 compatibility.
