George,
for sure 1.4.1 is not installed on your machine. Here is my current
1.4.1 listing after Panther "Archive and Install"
[KieranMac:~] kieran% ls -al
/System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.4.1
total 0
drwxr-xr-x 8 root wheel 272 17 Oct 21:47 .
drwxr-xr-x 9 root wheel 306 24 Sep 02:39 ..
drwxr-xr-x 11 root wheel 374 12 Sep 22:04 Classes
drwxr-xr-x 24 root wheel 816 27 Sep 05:18 Commands
drwxr-xr-x 12 root wheel 408 27 Sep 05:18 Headers
drwxr-xr-x 8 root wheel 272 17 Oct 21:47 Home
drwxr-xr-x 36 root wheel 1224 31 Oct 00:45 Libraries
drwxr-xr-x 7 root wheel 238 27 Sep 05:18 Resources
Do an Archive and Install, even on top of your current Panther and then
do XCode, Wo 5.2 and software update

There is an obvious difference between 1.3.1 and 1.4.1 on my machine.
But, 1.4.1 has more than just the Home directory, as follows:
