MultiECLockManager & dispose

When using MultiECLockManager, at what time can I call ec.dispose()? Any time the session is awake, the EC is locked. Is it safe to unlock the ec myself, unregister it, then dispose it, or will this cause problems? I know the EC will eventually get garbage collected, but I want to do it right away.
