A few days ago there was quite a lengthy discussion on this list about
this sorry topic. It boils down to the fact that wotaskd does not seem
to be compatible with Java 1.4. Although the solution posted by Stephan
F|rnrohr is for MacOS X Server, you should be able to fix it in similar
ways on Windows 2000 I think.
Look for a post by Stephan F|rnroh with the subject "Re: MacOSX 10.3
Server deployement".
Thanks for that... I looked in my Trash, and found just the message. However,
this option is not available on Windows as the Framework named doesn't
actually contain the 1.3.1 java.exe.
It turned out, in our case, to actually be down to there being a copy of
java.exe in \winnt\system32... a hang over from some strange Micro$oft
requirement upon 1.3.1, i believe. However that exe can't see the rest of the
java installation, so fails in the case of wotaskd.
Having removed that extra file, wotaskd now starts and launches & kills
application instances. How it will be in the longer term, I don't know, and
I'll be recommending that our technical department does some serious testing
before 5.2.2 gets deployed on any customer sites!
