I met Apple's head of marketing for WO, Bob Fraser at MacWorld San
Francisco last week and we chatted for a while. I started of course by
asking him about the marketing and he responded by saying that Apple is
involved as a Gold Sponsor at JavaOne for instance and that WO is featured
at OracleWorld. An interesting thing is that JavaOne and WWDC will be at
the same time and place this year which just may lead to some interesting
cross-feeding. I also got the impression that he wanted to do more but
marketingwise Apple is now focusing on the part of the product line that
makes most money. I almost felt that what we need (in the WO community) is
at least some kind of "help" from Apple in getting people to know what WO
is at least, but that is nothing that Apple will make any (immediate)
money on so I guess we will not see much more of that. We also talked a
little about the future and what I believe we will se first is better Java
support and code-completion for XCode (it does some indexing of the
current file project but not as fully-featured as for Objective-C) as well
as ant-style building.
When it comes to the PC he talked about Eclipse and said that he had been
playing around with it lately and thought it was interesting. I also tend
to think that as long as Eclipse and WOLips is out there Apple will not
look upon it as an iminent problem to adress.
Better support/integration for JBOSS seem to be the direction Apple is
heading to avaid developing their own J2EE application server. Expect
Apple to keep on with the combination of their own J2SE-based appserver in
WO and JBOSS for the forseable future.
I also asked him about the emailaddress email@hidden and he
assured me that mails sent there will be read and routed back to him. So,
go ahead please write letters there. I do.
