1. Should I remove anything (including XCode) before installing
WebObjects v5.2?
Removing XCode will harm your regular Mac OS X install.
I removed XCode and it removed tar... which is an important component
the OS relies on (software update, OpenBase backup, etc). Software
update stopped working for me. OpebBase's backup stopped working as
well.
2. Do I need to install the 2002 Developer Tools before installing
WebObjects v5.2?
XCode replaces the Dec 2002 Developer Tools (I believe).
3. If I DO need to install the 2002 Developer Tools, will they
destroy anything with XCode?
Yes.
I forgot what order I did to reinstall my WebObjects distribution.
However, it's a catch 22.
Once you install XCode, there's no going back. Uninstalling it and
reinstalling Dec 2002 Dev Tools left off tar and who knows what else.
Yet, 5.2.2 *requires* XCode (cannot use Project Builder with it).
I think I uninstalled WO. Uninstalled XCode. Installed Dec 2002 dev
tools. Installed WO 5.2. Upgraded to 5.2.1.
Things were working as normal at this point, *except* my
SoftwareUpdate was not working as described above.
So I reinstalled XCode.
Now my system is back to normal, but my WO 5.2.1 install is
questionable because XCode removes things required for WO's Project
Builder project types.
I might try to manually move over project builder support files from
another system to see if I can get WO 5.2.1 working under the XCode
install while still using Project Builder.
Whatever you do, however, once you've installed XCode, you need to
keep it installed (or end up back at having it installed).
The only other option is to do a system reinstall to make sure all
system components are in place.
