In this case it's closer to "my car does get 80mpg but I have no map and the roads haven't been fixed in years".

WO is obviously languishing as a development tool and shouldn't be advocated for or considered for future projects unless Apple comes out and tells us they have a plan to keep developing the tools. Don't hold your breath though. I'll continue to use it where I am, but there is no way that I can advocate for anyone else to take the same path.

My recommendation to anybody about to pick up WebObjects is to forget about it and go with another technology that is actively being developed, supported, and improved. Whatever technology you choose may not be as good as WO, but since it will be actively developed it will catch up and eventually surpass WO. In the meantime you will be gathering experience with the new tools and you'll have a better chance in a job market that has almost no place for WO because of Apple's neglect in both marketing and development.

Good Luck,

Jeff

PS. Apple will not only lose out on having a killer enterprise app in the market, but they'll be losing out on hardware sales. Four XServes have been purchased to handle my current project. If I was choosing a technology to build our app now and I didn't choose WO, I would probably go with some other commodity 1U rack mounted server running FreeBSD or Linux.

Has anyone in the recent group of list-contributors who have bemoaned the state of WebObjects noticed how this is not a perfect world?

There are lots of things I could complain about - "How come my car doesn't get 80mpg - What's with Detroit and their engine technology?"

The tool (WO) is what it is... a glorified hammer. The question should not be, "What's wrong with Apple - How come they're not doing more to make me happy?" - but, perhaps, "What can I do to make highest and best use of this tool?"
