I will leave it to others to answer the rest of you questions, but it is
a real misnomer to identify WebObjects as the "server solution for Mac."
WebObjects is arguably the oldest application server development
environment. It was originally a Next product that was originally focused
on NextStep (which eventually became OS X server 1.2), Windows, and
Solaris. For a LONG time you could not run WebObjects on a Mac.
Many of us still use Solaris and Windows as production deployment areas,
though with the advent of OS X 10.x, Apple has chosen to let the Windows
development environment get very long in the tooth--XP, for example is
not supported. But with the advent of Apple's new server hardware, there
is a very strong case now for an enterprise-level OS X/xServe deployment.
I use both Solaris and OS X Server to serve WO applications with Oracle
as my backend database. I use apache on AIX for my Web server for a
complete three-tier solution.
The only think I would add to your "Why WebObjects" question is that
WebObjects provides an extremely mature, highly versatile set of
frameworks that should be abel to solve just about any problem that
involves using a database and Web- or Java client-based tool to collect,
present, or process data.
