I am still a newbie. I had never done any web development in my life. I had a background in writing inhouse software using using Fortran, Visual Basic, a little C and simple database tools such as FileMaker Pro and MS Access. I had little experience in HTTP protocol, Unix, HTML, CSS, etc. I have developed equally on both Macs and Windows. I took interest in WO because of a desire to take inhouse data management desktop tools and processes to enterprise web-based systems for the benefit of our own sanity and customer value-add.

I spent 5% of my time over 12 months studying java itself, WebObjects, Object Oriented Programming with Java, HTML, CSS, etc. I produced and deployed by myself my first simple app from scratch in 5 days. That was my first app! The app consisted of an admin direct action login entry point and a consumer direct action entry point. It had, still has, 4 pages in total, has data entry, validation, authentication, and it integrates with an existing customer website (looks like it is part of their site, but it is hosted by our company). It has a MySQL backend database.

IMHO, any set of tools such as WO that can help a newbie like me create and deploy a small but scaleable session-based enterprise app in a week is well worth trying. EOF is amazing, bindings synchronization and keyvalue coding are productive. WO is so rich with functionality .... I love it.

And yes, I do use Mac OS X for development because the tools are better there right now than on WO Windows version and because I prefer Mac OS X and unix. We use XServes for deployment and database serving.

On the wishlist, I wish WOBuilder was as feature rich as a slimmed down version of DreamWeaver, or that WOBuilder's features could be integrated with DreamWeaver allowing me to offload more of the page layout stuff to the graphics design team.

WO.... well worth the money and I am glad I got stuck into it. if you want to see the true power of WO, you have to get your hands on some of the WO videos from the last 2 years WWDC's.

I have read the sales literature. I realize why Apple promotes
WebObjects. I am curious, however, why other people have chosen it.

Is it because they have a Mac and that is the server solution for Mac?
Is it because of EO Modeler? Is there some other reason?

I need to make a final decision on a web solution. I would be grateful
for any input each of you could provide as to why you selected
WebObjects.

Thanx,
Ryan
