I have received a couple of off-list replies from people that have had similar problems. Maybe I should ask this question in a different way. I am trying to secure original documents against crawling by web spiders and other "bad" people intent on downloading the files from the internet. The way I accomplished this under Jaguar was to pull the entire document structure into my admin user's Documents folder and use the absolute file path in my code to download those files to the client desktop as a data stream.
I am finding that in Panther I cannot do the same thing. For some reason, files located in my admin user's Documents folder are no longer downloadable from my WebObjects application. I have placed a test folder in the WebServer document root folder and used the absolute file path in a test database entry and the file downloads exactly as expected. Are there any issues with me placing a folder of pdf files protected by .htaccess in my WebServer root? Am I still accomplishing my goal which is to secure the files from prying eyes except for those who have logged into my WO application and have access to the links?
Thanks for any hints,
David

I am moving my application to Panther Server. Everything works as expected except for one thing. I have download links that pointed to a folder on my Desktop on the Jaguar Server and these links fail under Panther. I am at my wits end. The paths to the files are exactly the same. The only thing that I can think of is that the permission change for WebObjects applications running under root (in Jaguar) to running under appserver (in Panther) has affected my app's ability to access files that are not under the web server root.
Has anyone experienced this issue? Does anyone have a suggestion for how I would resolve it? Thanks,
David
