FrontBase is IMHO the best choice for most purposes.

* It's reasonably priced.
The Developer licence, which has all the features of FrontBase Enterprise, is free (which would make value for money -> ∞ :-) and the E-business licence, which is enough for most users, is only $999.

* The support is amazing.
They run a mailinglist that FrontBase staff follows and questions I've posted there have always been answered within a couple of hours.
A short story to illustrate my point: Two years ago, an important database on our servers was accidentally completely wiped (an employee got too trigger happy with EOModeler's "SQL"-button. Due to human error, the backups turned out to be garbage and unusable. In desperation I called FrontBase and asked if anything could be done. They asked for a copy of the DB-file, and two hours later, the database was back up and running. The really great part is that this all happened around midnight on December 23rd, if I recall correctly, I was never charged for this service and I'm not a large customer. I sometimes wonder if I actually dreamed this whole episode :-).

* It's reliable.
Never had problems with it in 6 years running tens (and now hundreds) of DBs.

* It just works.
It's amazing how nice it is to use a product that just works (I only get that feeling for two software products I use, FrontBase and CommuniGate Pro). When I first started using Oracle, MSSQL Server and MySQL (*shudder*) I couldn't believe how much trouble it was. With FrontBase, I never have to worry about anything - it just sits there quietly and stores the data I throw at it, exactly as it should.

* WebObjects integration is excellent.
The plug-in has support for schema synchronization and other niceties that I miss when using some other DBs.

* It runs on most platforms you can shake a stick at.
Mac OS X, Windows, FreeBSD, various flavors of Linux etc.

* It's Danish
The Danes are an excellent nation and they make really good beer. Support them ;-).

I should mention that I am NOT a database programmer by a long shot. I do my programming in java and I basically want to know as little as I can about the database that happens to store my objects. But because of this, I can't comment on how good FB is for other, perhaps more database centric development. But it's really good at disappearing into the background and making me not worry about it.
Well, I was just going to write a short letter, but here we are. Once I get going, I can't stop :-). I hope this unbiased letter will help you select a DB ;-).

Cheers,
Hugi

Now that I upgraded to OpenBase 8 I found that is comes with 15 days (only!) free development licence. What database would you use along with webobjects if it had to be free (or at least free development licence) and easy to install or well documented when using it with WO ? By now I'm trying to install MySQL using the info found at:
