Hi,

On Oct 26, 2004, at 9:46 AM, Stephen Charles Huey wrote:

I *think* it should work fine if you use Eclipse on WinXP. I think the Apple IDE requires a bit of force on WinXP as it was targeted at Win2K. No loss - the Apple IDE is horrid. I use WIn2K so I don't really know.

I currently do J2EE development,

We alI feel sorry for you.

and my understanding of WebObjects is
that it would help me develop applications more quickly, especially when
the level of complexity of EJB is not necessary.
That part of J2EE is a horrid, nasty mess. WO does (or can) use many other parts of the J2EE architecture.

It sounds like we should attempt to use this platform for our next project!

It _does_ have a steep learning curve, especially if you have been doing it the EJB way for a while.

I see on Amazon that there's a 600-page book published in 2002 by Sams
called WebObjects Developer's Guide, but there are no user reviews. Do
any of you know if this is a good book for picking up the concepts
quickly?

Actually, there are no user reviews for the Practical WebObjects (2004) book, either.
Actually, there are two. Only two? OK, come on people, no one else out there wants to scrawl a few words about the book on Amazon? I'd appreciate it if some other people would throw in their two cents, good, bad, or indifferent.

I wrote (part of) that book so I am biased. That said, *I* use it. Frequently. It is better than my memory. :-) It is not an introduction but you will find it well worth the money judging from the private responses that I have received.

Another old but potentially good option
on there is Professional WebObjects with Java which also doesn't have
any user reviews.

Where are you looking for user reviews? I see several for this book:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1861004311/102-2442306-6865756

For learning WO, this got good reviews, but is probably OS X centric:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/032111549X/102-2442306-6865756

http://www.webobjects.com also has documentation and tutorials well worth your time to go through.

Finally, consider OSX - at least for deployment if not development. Based on BSD it is a rock solid platform for deployment with a great UI and support. The server machines have a most impressive price to performance ratio. It is also a very nice development platform. Hey! MacOS doesn't suck any more!
