It works in development mode because you are using DirectConnect which
hides all manner of problems until they can cause you real distress.
There are no timeouts in DirectConnect.
It does not work in deployment because somehow you have implemented the
long response page incorrectly and the response is not returning
quickly as is intended. Check your code.
