Kieran,

I can second Chuck's suggestion of cosign.

My university (Penn State) has adopted cosign for use by University web
sites to run against our Kerberos authentication. The University tested
many different solutions and ended up with this. The scalablity was a key
factor. It is going well and being adopted by more and more web sites
here at Penn State. Currently there are over 60 Web sites using it (just
the tip of the ice burg but growing every day) and our Kerberos realm is
well over 125,000 principles.
