Ken,

This should be pretty easy to answer from someone who has the physical OS X Tiger Server software box and manuals/documentation which I don't have access to at the moment.

Looking at our Panther Server software box, there is a separate independent WebObjects License document (which does not within itself specify any WebObjects version).

Looking at section 2.2 "Authorized Deployment System", it clearly indicates ANY computer that runs an operating system that supports Java technology.

To answer the question completely, could someone on the list who has a purchased copy of OS X Tiger Server verify that there is indeed a standalone "WebObjects Software License Agreement" in the box, and if so look at the definition of the Authorized Deployment System to see if the definition is the same, in which case WO can be deployed anywhere that Java is supported and as such is "platform-independent" to the same extent as Java itself.

Regards, Kieran

PS. The license also states that if you disagree with it simply return it to Apple for a refund. If you have an Apple store nearby, I am sure they will have an open box of Tiger Server and would be glad to show you the contents of the box and allow you to read the 2-page license.

Kieran,

Do you have confirmation somewhere that purchasing a copy of OS X Server is needed / adequate to run WebObjects on other platforms? When at WWDC, I was not able to confirm this.

Development for 5.3 is free and included in XCode

Deployment for 5.3 is INCLUDED in the OS X Tiger Server license as a bundled feature of Tiger Server. If you are only interested in the WebObjects license that is part of OS X Server, then you buy the $499 OS X Tiger Server which is a price REDUCTION of $200 over the former standalone $699 WebObjects 5.2 license.

Does anyone know where I can ask about this? I'm trying to pitch a project at my company to use WO and licensing is one of the major issues. I've called ADC and the person we spoke to couldn't give us an answer and redirected us to Apple Licensing from which we've not had any replies...
