Hi there. The response I got from someone at Apple was...
The individual installers don't apply 'diffs'. However, the 5.2.2
update contains all of the frameworks recompiled with a 1.4.1 JVM
(hence the 150MB file size) whereas the other updates don't.
So basically it's best to install the updates in order.

I installed 5.2 from the CD, then installed 5.2.4 from the updater
without complaint. But the strange thing is that I went back and
clicked on the 5.2.2 installer to see if it would complain that a
newer version was installed, but it just started installing anyway.
grrr.
Anyone?
