Well it is great news. Good to have WO as part of the mainstream MacOS X tools.

The legal response was very clear today from Apple:

WO 5.3 is only SUPPORTED on MacOS X 10.4.

Nothing has been done to stop it running on anything else. Indeed, the licenses now no longer check for platform specifics.

Development is free but only on MacOS X.

Deployment requires a license. The only way to buy a license is a) to get it free with Xserve or b) to buy MacOS X Server - US$499 for 10 client (no impact on WO so why pay $999 for unlimited?)

So it is all excellent. US$100 price cut for deployment if you are not on Mac hardware and free dev seats.

What is there not to like about that? Also, WOBuilder does a nice job now too...and, of course, requires MacOS X.

would you mind asking someone from Apple for us so that we can get some sort

We're engineers, not lawyers. The license agreement, shown when you install
5.3, should speak for itself. We're not here to give you legal advice.

do I still need a license

Yes.

why does Apple still sell 5.2 in its online store...)

Which reminds me, just an hour ago I saw a boxed copy of 5.2 for sale at the
San Francisco retail store!

P.S. I hope everyone appreciates the major point of 5.3: it's now a part of
the mainstream developer tools, and from now on will get the attention and
visibility it deserves. WebObjects is no longer a second-class neglected
technology. I think that's outstanding news!
