I would have to disagree with your assessment "that the cross platform
and write once is a myth" in the case of WO.
While we do use OS X for development, a lot of our deployments have been
on Solaris boxes because we found that WO apps actually run better on
Solaris than OS X.
The JVM on Solaris is a true server version (They did announce that once
OS X moves to Intel there would finally be a server JVM), and we have
found that memory management worked better. We also deployed to Solaris
because there are some native applications on Solaris that are not
available for OS X that our applications call.
In defense of Apple's decision to go to a single platform, this move to
have WO be integrated into xCode as a full citizen, as well as the move
to add WO to the Server Admin tool are all indications that WO has moved
from periphery of Apple to the mainstream of the Apple management. From
where the WO group sits this is a good move. The alternative was to cut
it loose, and Apple could have done that, too. From an organizational
culture perspective, WO stops being Steve's red-headed step child and
moves to be a real part of the organization.
So while this does mean we all need to get good at .war deployment, it
does mean that Apple is making a real commitment to supporting and
enhancing WebObjects.
They also made the point that this move will allow them to make
refinements and enhancements that take advantage of OS X features
without having to duplicate them for non-OS X development environments.
So this is good news, in a way. It does mean the WO has a future at Apple.
