Although I think you are right as far as outside sales goes, WO has
been making them money indirectly through it's use for the Apple Store
et al. So these changes could be just a way to help their own
developers and nothing to do with us out here at all. Better
integration with XCode, opening the door to adding OS X-specific
code... these are things that their internal developers will benefit
from as much as and probably more than anyone else.
My personal opinion is that selling hardware is secondary because any
additional XServe sales they get from restricting deployment to OS X
will be offset by XServes that will never be purchased because the
opportunity to try out WO before making that kind of investment has
been lost (running unsupported doesn't count as many IT depts have
policies that won't allow it). However, we are all just guessing, and
I expect that we will never know how or why the decision was made, or
how it actually turns out.
Second, and this is the elephant that I always see getting lost among
the complaints, where do you suppose there is certainty in the tech
world?
True enough. But I think that people have a right to expect a bit more
certainty from a company and product that have been around for as long
as Apple and WO have been.
Just MHO,
janine
