FYI, we have just integrated an 'ajax' library with Webobjects :

Yes. JSON-RPC provides a servlet handler "out-of-the-box":

Yes, we based our wo-component handler implementation on it, so far we
build a 'component-action' component.
Eventually, it would be nice to have a json-rpc request handler,
avoiding the overhead of the 3 phases of the ComponentRequestHandler
... a 'to-do'.
That said, what would be more interesting, beside a more solid
implementation, would be a set of (WO)Component that seamlessly
leverage such a setup. Perhaps in WebObjects 6+ :P
Yes, with today's rich client technologies, WO6 could not be so tightly
coupled with html (3.x) elements.
A nice architecture for wo6, would be to decouple the interface layer
to be more in a plug-ins style, so that we could have the current
html-3.x plugins (nostalgy), and have many more as techonogies goes on
: xhtml - dhtml / xul / java-swing / etc...
