I had planned to make a video of Chuck & Sacha's class in Seattle,
but I neglected to bring an AC charger for the camera, so I only got
35 minutes of video before the battery died. I am a programmer and
not, repeat not, a video professional; and I was half-heartedly into
the task as I was very uncertain of its outcome.
Surprisingly, the video turned out better than I expected, so given
the opportunity to do the task again, I would have a great deal more
confidence in its outcome.
I would like to share what I learned.
First, a professional would have 2 cameras and an external mic and
charge several thousand dollars for a six hour class.
I had originally intended to use 2 cameras myself, and would have
used an external mic if either of my 2 cameras had an attachment for
one. Interestingly enough, the sound I got from what I did do was
perfectly adequate.
This is what I did:
I used only one camera which I mounted on a tripod about 8 feet from
the the LCD projection screen that Sacha and Chuck's computer was
projected onto. I did clip a little of the left side of the screen
which is, of course, undesirable, but the information was adequate
enough to decipher.
This is what I would do a second time:
Bring up the height of the camera so that it would be closer to
parallel to the screen. Bring a digital still camera with me to take
still shots of the white board, there were 2 that Chuck used in the
room. This, IMO, would be a lot less work than running multiple video
cameras.
This is what I did: ( on a dual 1.8 GHz G5, with 2.5GB of RAM and two
250GB disks )
I used Final Cut Express to clean up extraneous pauses, etc. and then
I did several rendering attempts with a sharpen filter applied. With
the sharpen set to its highest value I gave up after 4 hours of
rendering and FCE telling me I needed 10 more hours. I set the
sharpen filter down to a value of three and after 5 hours the render
was complete, and sure enough, the projected computer screen was
clear enough to read.
Now I have been enjoying looking at the video with a notepad and a
bowl of popcorn <g>, because their excellent presentation was dense
with valuable information. More useful to me, I might add, then the
stuff Apple sends out in DVD format of WWDC which only plays in
Quicktime on your computer in a small window, why they couldn't send
us real DVD's baffles me, this from the 2001 conference.
At this point Global-Village is deciding on what, if any, use is to
be had for this DVD, as a biased individual I am of no value in
determining its usefulness in a general sense. If anyone has some
advice to offer on this, email me and/or Global Village, that's Chuck
or Sacha, with suggestions.
PS: the video shows the portion of their presentation on Direct
Actions, the request-response loop, debugging WO apps, and deployment
tips. It was shot at the beginning of the day. I hope this encourages
someone to do a video of their SF class as I think it can be done on
the cheap.
