On a somewhat related note, I'd always wondered why the EO model and WO
component bundles had a flat structure - they didn't have the usual
single Contents/ directory containing the actual files. Instead, they
just had a bunch of files at the first level of the folder. Recently, it
occurred to me that this was for the benefit of developers on Windows -
they can't just double click on the folder to open the model or
component. They have to drill down a bit and double-click on the right
file - this saves a level of drilling.
No, as I recall it's for 'hysterical raisins'. NeXT (and hence, WO)
never had the redundant Contents/ folder, but for some reason involving
Mac OS 9 somehow (I think the foo.app/Contents/MacOSClassic/foo
hierarchy) it got inserted into bundles for Mac OS X. WebObjects didn't
have to support classic Mac OS, but was still supporting NeXTSTEP
presumably for a while...law of least action meant those bundles didn't
change.
That's my understanding, anyhoo.
