WebObjects is a fantastic competitive advantage when quoting for new jobs, because I can use it to deliver more quickly and cheaply, with a higher quality, than anything else I know of. But I wouldn't be able to do this without WOBuilder or something similar.

I was about to disagree, thinking you must have been on the other side of the planet, where there seem to be more WO jobs, but then noticed from your email address that you are only on the other side of the city ;-)

Anyway, I do notice that most advertised jobs want J2EE (although it's now Java EE 5) and one I have recently noticed is moving from WO 4.5 to JEE5. I can't help but feel that the battle for this space is being fought between JEE5 and .Net and WO has been allowed to slip behind, even though it might still be in front of these, but there is so much activity going on with the other two and apart from project Wonder, not much in WO.

I think JEE5 has an advantage over .Net in that it is platform neutral, but .net has an advantage that C# seems better than Java, having got generics right and a few other things (that the Java people should have fixed, by providing multiple JVMs or ability to run different code in one JVM). But better than C#, you can run other languages within the .net environment, like Eiffel.

So both .net (MS) and Java (Sun) have the same problem - they want to be closed to certain aspects - Sun to other languages and MS to other platforms. However, if I were Apple, I'd be considering if WO has a place in this battle at all. I do think it's important for them to be in the Enterprise space and to get the hearts and minds of those in IT and the corporate sector.

Ian
