There can be a *lot* of white space in the output when you've got lots of little reusable components in play.

To get smaller transfer sizes and better transfer times, we use mod_gzip which seems to work very good. I'v never done any "pretty printing" for responses despite that I write my components so, that is is not too much white space in there.
