I doubt they will. They are too invested in in for in house projects.
As for comments about Apple not supporting anything but 64-bit, I don't see a problem with that. Why should Apple have to add support for something that Sun didn't, and for hardware they are no longer selling? 1.5 is around and will be supported for a while. That should be enough.
Java is open source, so anyone can go back and update it for what ever purpose. But why should Apple cripple it when they can provide a better experience for new customers?
