That is a good point. Ajax is another area that serious affects
accessibility. I have not seen much information on how to handle that,
other than to have a parallel, non-Ajax accessible page / site.
The main difficulty for screen readers on Ajax enabled sites is that the
screen reader reads the page in to a virtual buffer when the page loads, and
therefore doesn't detect changes to the page unless the whole page is
reloaded.
JAWS, the commercial screen reader from Freedom Scientific and NVDA, an open
source screen reader for Windows have some support for Aria live regions,
but Ajax isn't fully supported by any screen reader on the Mac or Windows at
this time.
A similar situation was encountered with the introduction of Flash, and it
took some time for screen reader vendors to implement a solution. I am sure
Ajax support will improve in the major screen readers as demand for it
grows.
