Here is a crash course in Java specifically for new WebObjects web app developers:
http://developer.apple.com/documentation/WebObjects/JavaForWODev/JavaForWODev.pdf

Along with Bruce Eckel's book which Chuck recommended, I also recommend the following for new java developers:
- Head First Java
- Head First Design Patterns

For WebObjects web application development you can skip all the Swing stuff.

With some time off I've decided to get my feet wet with WO. I'm as new to WO and Java as it gets. :-)

Look for the on-line version of Thinking in Java by Bruce Eckel.
