So, any installer that is used for anything other than OS X, is in violation of the WebObjects license?

Hrm, not a lawyer, standard disclaimers apply...

I think that installing is fine (especially since I think you are only installing the run time). If you chose to use that installed runtime to *develop* rather than deploy on non Apple hardware then you are in violation.

Whether Apple legal actually cares enough to do anything about it is another question.

* Linux (Red Hat Enterprise)
Development work must be done on Linux (Red Hat Enterprise). I have read
something on WOCommunity.org that the initial installation needs are Mac,
and after that the packages could be moved to Linux. Is the installation
process difficult? Has anyone done DEVELOPMENT work on Linux using
WebObjects 5.4? -- I need to be very sure about this. Thanks!
Unfortunately, while deployment is allowed on any platform, development on anything other than OS X is not allowed by the WebObjects license.

I don't believe it actually states that you have to run OSX, it does however say you have to use apple hardware, so the logical conclusion is you will be using OSX, as all WO development needs to be done on a Mac. Active WOLips development is only really geared toward supporting OSX, and windows to a small degree. If it works fine on linux it's by chance rather than by design.

There is no technical limitation at all for this, and in fact you can use the WOInstaller.jar to install completely without OS X, but you WILL be in violation of the license terms.

Just to clarify, using WOInstaller.jar on your system doesn't violate the license terms, as it only facilitates installing the webobjects runtime and doesn't install any development related tools, however using the resulting runtime installation for development purposes on non apple systems will constitute a violation of the license terms.

This is a risk you will have to evaluate for yourself. I would also recommend waiting until 5.4.2 is officially released (presumably with the iPhone SDK, which is likely July 11th along with the iPhone) rather than going with 5.4.0 or 5.4.1, if nothing other than the SQL generation issues surrounding 5.4.<2.

* WebObjects Builder
Apple has deprecated most of the WebObjects development tools, including
WebObjects Builder. So, what is the equivalent or replacement for WebObjects
Builder, to build applications on LINUX?
Ignoring the license violation, the replacement is just like on every other platform, which is to use Component Editor in Eclipse. It is not a graphical editor like WOB, but it is very powerful and most people I have talked to end up preferring it after switching.
