Hello John;
...and I don't think the source would necessarily have much impact
on the community.
If I had have had the source code I would have been able to
investigate, patch and move forward rather than roll-back to a
previous major version and then to wait an indefinite and unknown
period of time until Apple resolved the issue and then to go through
it all again. By having source-access I could have resolved the first
issue, notified Apple of the patch, and moved to the second and third
issues more quickly.
WebObjects 5.4.0 was released in October 2007. It took until around
one year to get a stable version of WebObjects 5.4.X for production
use. I would suggest that had the community been able to access the
source code, this timeframe could have been considerably shorter. We
all know that managing these releases requires time and so being able
to shorten the release cycle and get more fixes into each release is
of benefit to the community. Having source access under some license
would help in making this possible.
cheers.
