But with the Practical WO book, I suggest either Ravi Mendis book or the Wrox one. They were written in the Project Builder days, but you can find a copy of the book samples here :
Ravi's book is available on O'Reilly Safari. Certainly,
A lot of the learning curve with WO, IMHO, is sometimes things seem to work by magic. Practical WO does a good job of demystifying items like the component architecture and the request/response loop.
Especially if you are coming from PHP where the developer is responsible for a lot of the low level details. Once you learn WO it really speeds up your dev time because you get so much power from the underlying frameworks. I understand ROR is a lot like that but I don't have much exposure to it.

I think I've purchased all the WO titles and this was my favorite. It continues to augment my development as I get better and better at WO.
