ok I found an answer!!!

I had to add   ec.dispose();

to the finally section of Kieran's ERJRFetchSpecificationReportTask _call method.

I will ask if there is a reason that this is needed. It must have something to do with the to_many relationship.

oh well, I seem to recall when I listened to the JasperReports podcast, someone was asking about the dispose() method being called. That's what led me to try it.
