Okay, I was stuck same as John Gates, with fink looking to install
system-xfree86 ver 4.2-5
I'd run fink update-all to update the info on packages, but after
more careful reading of the fink man pages, discovered that I should
have also run fink selfupdate.
After running selfupdate and update-all, the command "fink install
system-xfree86" replaced 4.2-5 with a new 4.2-11, and found the Apple
X11 system.
Here's the end of the log:
- found apple library
- found /usr/X11R6/bin/xterm
- found /usr/X11R6/bin/xrdb
- found /usr/X11R6/bin/rman
- found /usr/X11R6/lib/libX11.dylib
- found /usr/X11R6/lib/libXpm.dylib
- found /usr/X11R6/lib/libXaw.dylib
- found /usr/X11R6/include/X11/Xlib.h
Valid Apple X11 detected. Thank you, have a nice day.
Unpacking replacement system-xfree86 ...
Setting up system-xfree86 (4.2-11) ...
Moral to the story: read the man pages _carefully_, and run "fink
selfupdate" before "fink update-all"
At least that's what worked for me.
