Apple has been pretty consistently anti-theming with respect to OSX
though. This includes not just the "appearance" of windows and the like
but also the behavior. While this has annoyed many who turn to "haxies"
and other such hacks, I think it has been wise overall. For one it
provides a consistent environment for users. It also cuts down on tech
support. Having done IT for a while before escaping, I can attest that
letting users have free reign for controlling interface to that degree
is a headache and an half.
I'm pretty sure they lose customers over the issue. I also work in tech support
for an X platform, and we don't have so much of a problem in that area. Of course,
we don't have Apple's user base, and our customers are somewhat more technically
competent, but still.
I think that at least allowing us to work the way we want would be wise;
perhaps making it non-obvious to enable and 'unsupported'.
This does admittedly bug the "linux" crowd who is used do a great deal
more flexibility.
Right, though it's not just the linux crowd. In any case, IINM, the window
managers in Linux also default to similar behaviour.
All I can say is that I doubt it will ever change.
I have to agree with you there, though the more people who shout about it,
the more likely it is to happen (perhaps).
Perhaps someone will come up with a 3rd party hack.
The guys from CodeTek said it is 'impossible' (the bit about not raising windows
when they get focus).
Max.
