gnome-session not liking sawfish!

I am running Panther
I have installed the gnome-bundle from fink
I run X11 in Root mode.
When I start up gnome-session there are no frames on the windows.
Usually common when a windows manager has not been started.
I don't start a windows manager in my .xinitrc as gnomes starts sawfish
when it starts up.
I do however start quartz-wm --proxy-only
So I open the gnome control centre and switch from sawfish to ice and
then back to sawfish. This gives me frames but the control centre
crashes and I have to kill the process.
Now if I start the gnome control centre I cannot access any of the
controls for sawfish. It give an error "applet has encountered an
error", whenever you choose an option in the sawfish menu.
The other oddity is if I do start sawfish before I start gnome-session
then the gnome-sesision complains saying I am running a windows manager
that is not compatible with gnome. If you cancel the error message
gnome starts but you get the same problem with changing any of the
sawfish attributes using the control centre.
I did look though the archives but see nothing matching this problem
This is a new install with newest fink version and gnome-bundle
installed for 10.3
Anyone any suggestions?
Gary
