Well looks like this is a bug. I have tried multiple ways to change
the sawfish attributes including editing the configuration files.
Nothing seems to work.
The only thing I really want to make it useable is to change the
number of virtual desktops from 1 to 4. I cannot find the control
file that has this information stored. At the moment there is 1
desktop and the desktop applet is in the bottom panel. You can access
the applet to change the settings but changing them has no effect.
Is anyone aware of this bug or any workaround. If you know where the
configuration file is I'd like to change the text setting to see if
there is any effect.
Any help appreciated.

Didn't work.
So I am still at the same point. All starts up fine but I cannot
change any of the sawfish defaults
due to error. I can start up any other window manager that is
compatible with gnome

I am running Panther
I have installed the gnome-bundle from fink
I run X11 in Root mode.
When I start up gnome-session there are no frames on the windows.
Usually common when a windows manager has not been started.
I don't start a windows manager in my .xinitrc as gnomes starts
sawfish
when it starts up.
I do however start quartz-wm --proxy-only
Try starting this after sawfish. I had a problem (on 10.2.X) with
sawfish complaining that another WM was running, and crapping out.
So I
just put the quartz-wm --proxy-only in my gnome sessions startup
programs, and haven't had a problem since.
