Most modern WMs support "sloppy focus," where the root window doesn't grab
focus, so you can safely move the cursor onto the desktop. Personally, I
just don't get irritated by this. Also, there's tools to make the cursor
disappear on keypress (I want to say "xclutter" but I don't think that's
the name of the common one).
