If you run the "Start OpenOffice.org" application inside the OpenOffice
folder, it should let you choose Apple's X11.
If you have Apple's X11 installed, then navigate to the location of X11
and select it. Launch X11 and then doubleclick the "Start
OpenOffice.org" document again. This time it will start up.
It does not "require" XDarwin.
XDarwin and Apple's X11 are both Xservers. (<-- noob interpretation?)
XDarwin is more functional, but for new users, a bit harder to setup.
It's also slower to launch. Apple will catch up in the functionality
department I'm sure. :)
I had the GIMP and OpenOffice running under Apple's X11.
Worked fine after a little troubleshooting of environment setup.
