Has anyone been able to get .bash_profile to be executed without

Yes. .bash_profile should get executed automatically when the bash
shell starts up. The way I have set bash up as my default shell was
to use the NetInfo Manager application. I click on users and select
myself. I then edit the 'shell' field and type /bin/bash.
If this doesn't work for you, I would like to know.
