Thanks Marin - this did the trick. It was an old installation of fink. Everythink seems to be working.

Unpacking system-xfree86 (from .../system-xfree86_4.2-1_darwin-powerpc.deb) ...

Your problem is that the version of system-xfree86 you are trying to install is way too old. You need version 4.2-5. Normally, you would get this version automatically from "apt-get install".

The fact apt-get doesn't fetch the new version for you indicates that something is wrong with your fink installation. What version of fink do you have installed? You say "the latest version", but maybe you didn't install the version for OSX 10.2?

Also you say that system-xfree86 comes "with a handy installer", something called "system-xfree86.command". Where did you get this from? It apparently contains the old version.

A last point: Don't worry about the install_name_fix.pl script. I suppose it is what you are trying to run when you get

dhcp-floor4a-sw-37:~/Scrips] gtate% sudo ./fink-apple-x11-updater.pl
can't run /usr/bin/install_name_tool

The error message means that you don't have the Developer Tools installed (at least not the right version). So you don't seem to want to compile things yourself. In this case, the script is not necessary.
