I believe that will work if you specify the display 0:0.
ie xclock -display 0:0

hm... It would be _really cool if trying to launch an x application in
a terminal window either automatically launched X, or gave a dialog
asking if we really did want to launch X! :) That would be awesome!

PS: Dima, no, this was not the solution to my gnuplot problem; but
