terminal and x11

So, I have my path set in terminal so I can launch x-apps from there, instead of only from an xterm. However, this only works in terminal windows which are opened/launched _after x11.app is running. I think, in a general way, I sort of understand why. But can anyone give me a more detailed explanation, and is there a workaround that would allow terminal windows that were up previously to "just work" once x11.app is running?
hm... It would be _really cool if trying to launch an x application in a terminal window either automatically launched X, or gave a dialog asking if we really did want to launch X! :) That would be awesome! Apple, you listening? :)

PS: Dima, no, this was not the solution to my gnuplot problem; but your email gave me this idea.
