I agree with Preston that an explanation of the X11 directory tree and a
recap of the type of files that can be found in each directory (executables,
fonts, pref files, etc.) would be most useful.
Is there a document or tutorial explaining this somewhere on the Net ?
Or any kind soul willing to give a quick overview here ?

BTW, Preston, I don't know if this is out of the scope of your question, but
I came across an article that include a basic explanation of the Darwin
directory tree (but not the X11 directory tree alas) on OSXFAQ :
