Thanks for the tip, Edward. At least this is a beginning.
If there is no such document, could we put our collective heads
together and do this as a group? It would be very helpful to those of
us who are relative newbies, trying to get the most out of X11. As a
read about how to get things to work, there are frequent referrals to
files in my home directory. But when I look, some of these files do not
exist. Maybe examples of basic tschrc, bashrc, profile, etc. would be
useful as well as starting points for customizing our systems.

I agree with Preston that an explanation of the X11 directory tree and
a
recap of the type of files that can be found in each directory
(executables,
fonts, pref files, etc.) would be most useful.
Is there a document or tutorial explaining this somewhere on the Net ?
Or any kind soul willing to give a quick overview here ?
Many thanks in advance guys,
Edward
BTW, Preston, I don't know if this is out of the scope of your
question, but
I came across an article that include a basic explanation of the Darwin
directory tree (but not the X11 directory tree alas) on OSXFAQ :
