X11, Fonts, and OpenOffice

I made the changes to my FreeType config as mentioned here, <http://www.macosxhints.com/ article.php?story=20030211071906995&query=X11>, and although this works for doing things like starting up xterm with a font in one of OS X's font directories, this doesn't work with programs like OpenOffice.

As much as I like OpenOffice, I can't really get into it until I can get it to work with my regular Mac OS X fonts. Does anybody know how to do this, or if it is possible at this point? OpenOffice does claim it uses FreeType, but my fonts don't show up at all...
