Or you could get the best of both worlds like this:

  $ Xnest -display :0 :1 &
  $ your-favorite-desktop-based-wm -display :1 &

(FWIW I use ctwm, attach 4 desktops to F8-F11 and bind the "background"
menus to Ctrl+button[123] on window frames, so having a "real" root window
is a non-issue for me; I don't miss it at all. ;)
