I had KDE 3.0.7 running pretty well in X11 0.2, and just recently I
decided to try the KDE 3.1 from Fink's unstable tree. It compiled
fine (bundle-kde-ssl) but startkde seems to hang right after it kills
ksplash - the process is still running, but no KDE desktop or windows
have appeared, and X1 is still purring away. The splash appears for a
while during KDE's loading sequence, but when it goes, kde doesn't
finish loading - any ideas why? The only element introduced since
last time is a new sound card (which I'm experimenting with as we
speak) and the 10.2.4 update.
Did you configure the .xinitrc so that it logs the output to a file?
(ie, 'fink info bundle-kde' says to redirect the startkde output to
/tmp/kde.log)
If so, is there anything there that says why it may not be starting?
I'm not aware of any freezing problems in 3.1 in unstable except for an
audio bug that can cause arts to freeze, but it doesn't happen until
KDE has started up and arts releases the sound card from idleness, so
it shouldn't be the cause of your issue.
