I now have the same settings as these in com.apple.x11; however, when I go
to preferences->security, the first button is checked. This is after
closing and restarting X11.app.
Also, folks who have responded so far mention they connect to other X
servers. I wonder whether that might have an effect. I do not connect to
other X servers. I use X so I can run XEmacs and retain all the lisp code
I've gotten used to using over the years. I wonder whether the act of
authenticating with a remote server might somehow set a value that prevents
the loss of operability? By the way, when the problem occurs, I can still
raise windows (without the widgets), open new apps (without X widgets), and
access menus in the X11 menubar. The Window menu item shows all the
information, but it is greyed out. None of the raised or opened windows
will accept input--again points to window manager problems. In fact, the
way the system responds does not match the statement in the
Preferences->Security screen at all which says applications may not launch.
I do have all the Apple System Preferences firewall items turned off (i.e.
no remote access allowed, plus ports 25, 1434, and 5999-6064 blocked. I
need these blocked at work because our campus network has so much
promiscuous chatter that when I don't block them, my PB spends most of its
time dealing with requests for connections.
