Under XDarwin/OroborOSX I was able to use the Apple Option key for foreign and special characters so that all the characters available in Key Caps were available in the xterm or LyX, e.g., Option+g = ), Option+e+e = i, etc.

Alas, even Apple's list-processing software is incapable of passing 8-bit characters! The ")" after Option+g should be a copyright sign, and the "i" after Option+e+e should be an e with an acute accent.

The question remains: how do I configure Apple X11 to enable the use of the Option key for foreign and special characters, or is there a way to configure a Multi <compose> key in Apple X11? Thanks,
