Option key for foreign/special characters

Under XDarwin/OroborOSX I was able to use the Apple Option key for
foreign and special characters so that all the characters available in
Key Caps were available in the xterm or LyX, e.g., Option+g = ),
Option+e+e = i, etc.
How do I configure Apple X11 to enable this use of the Option key in
X11 programs? Thanks,
